Spore: Creature Creator first look

[Note: All impressions are made using the 'Trial' version of Spore's Creature Creator]

I have been looking over the Creature Creator for Spore over the last day or so. From what I have seen of it so far it makes for a fun editing tool, which looks to be a big part of the Spore experience (be it transforming your cell into a land faring creature to transforming a tribe into a city & beyond).

Overall I found the Creature Creator incredibly user friendly, allowing for mistakes in creation rather than the interface holding you back from experimentation. One early example of this had me create a fairly tall two legged beast which I had placed the arms too close & low on the body meaning that the creature couldn’t lift his arms. Instead a webbing between arm & body could be seen, every time an arm raise was attempted.

I also noted that as long as your created creature has a head and facial features, he(?) will give his judgement on new body parts you add. I have had a fair share of disapproving head shakes from my creations.

With 2,000 destiny points almost anything goes within even the 25% functionality of the trial version. I hope to get hold of the full Creature Creator very soon & will be covering that then.

Tom & I had planned to run both our thoughts on the CC in this post but Tom has been struggling to get into his copy due to a bad activation key being issued to him. His thoughts will be in a future post.

A regular reader here at Sweet Flag, Aaron at Anyway Games, has a concise round-up of the CC. Between us we did find only a few minor early drawbacks/questions:

Sporepedia – accessed via the CC directly only seems to show your creations & that of Maxis(around 30). This may mean that the CC will only be directly linked to Sporepedia on the full retail release of Spore or that the trial version, which I am using, may not allow direct connection to the full Sporepedia.

How have you found the Sporepedia? Are you having the same problems as us?

Gender – There seems to be no distinction between male or female made in the CC which is kind of odd as breeding is part of Spore’s main game. Does this mean by default for all your creations are of a  masculine disposition?

As you can see not too much to gripe about really.

Best tip – Use your scroll wheel on your mouse to expand the bone structure of your creature’s spine. This allows for some very interesting shapes to you creations.

More from both Tom & myself on the Creature Creator in future posts.

All breeding is sexual, but the sexes look exactly alike. You’re designed both at the same time.

There are over 700,000 creatures already listed on the public Sporepedia at Spore.com. So not everyone is having the problem of their CC’s Sporepedia not connecting to the public one. Perhaps the 25% version doesn’t connect, and you have to pay for the full version for that feature?

  2. dmosbon Says:

Maybe your right Aaron with only 25% of the full version, the trial may not give you access to the Sporepedia.

    What have other 25%’ers found?

  3. Mullen Says:

i got 25% one and can access sporepedia

    and i got a 75% one….

    dunno how

  4. dmosbon Says:

Mullen can you access the full sporepedia via the Creature Creator(25%)?

  5. Mullen Says:

i can see mine and 30 maxis ones

  6. dmosbon Says:

Ah OK Mullen that is the same as me & Aaron…not what we should be seeing. Have asked EA about this…waiting to hear back.

  7. Gitr Says:

The 30 creatures are grayed out when I went there, but it was after midnight, so I admit to only spending about 15 seconds on that screen. I’ll take a look again today, but it looks like the version I got is local plus e-mailing postcards only.

  8. Gitr Says:

Update, I can see all 30 creatures. Even my wife made one last night. We can see 35 creatures now. We’re having a blast building creatures.

I tell you, if she stays home from now on, she might end up playing Spore! She likes making cute creatures. I think today’s project is a mean one.

  9. dmosbon Says:

Gitr what version of the CC did you get? Did you pay or free download?

You are seeing the same as the others who have commented here on this thread…just checked & I still see only Maxis and my creations via the CC version of Sporepedia itself.
