Early retirement from PC gaming?

12 years ago my first PC arrived & with it began many years of MMO & single player gaming. Previous to those 12 years, I had the C64 but none of the early consoles of that time.

My gaming has been dominated by the PC since my mid twenties, I have no regrets & even owning a PS2 couldn’t shake the grip of the PC but now, with the arrival of my PS3, the tide seems to be turning & I feel a new gaming period arriving.

The PS3 gives me something that I can never reach with a PC, that is a level playing field. No more game specs to worry about & no more running a game at just the average settings. I buy a game for the PS3 & every other PS3 owner buys then plays the same game.

With the introduction of wireless Internet at home, my PS3 has access to multiplayer gaming & for the first time my online gaming is being taken away from my 2 year old PC.

Maybe there will be some titles that I will want on the PC but I seriously doubt there will be many & the exclusive PS3 titles are starting to look good, with Little Big Planet being a good example.

So as I enter this new chapter in my gaming experience, I have to ask, how many of my readers are considering leaving the PC behind?

Have you already done so?

Am I making a mistake & should I keep up my reporting on PC gaming here at Sweet Flag?

DM, I don’t have the funds to start all over again on a console or have access to a nice TV that would want to play on during my game time. Our TV is right by our bedroom, so that would definitely keep my wife awake.

I also don’t have the discipline to not want PC games after dropping coin on a console.

We are considering getting a Wii to stay active when we don’t want to go out, but that will probably be the extent of our console gaming… someday.

Well Jesse I have been selling off my PS2 & PC games to give me some capital for PS3 titles, got Fifa 08 coming this week & I plan to sell my PS2 which should give me enough for 1 PS3 game.

PC gaming has gotten a little old for me now & I need a new challenge to freshen things up, especially now that the freelance game writing has taken off.

I only have a 32″ non HD ready TV just now but it’s enough for now…

I know how you feel. I was really into competitive gaming for a long time and now my gaming is mostly just playing wii golf… The older you get the tougher it gets to keep playing.

I’ll never abandon PC gaming. Most of the games I’m excited about these days are on the console (so many, I won’t list them). But some games simply feel better on the PC, like LOTR: Battle for Middle Earth 2 and Black & White.

One month ’til the Spore demo!

Ah Aaron, I see you mention RTS/God games there…maybe they aren’t represented well on the console platform…yet!

Spore has had some of the gloss rubbed from it recently for me but I’ll still be getting the demo & as far as I know only the Wii will be getting a version of the game but who knows we may still see a PS3/XB version…

online gaming clan…missed you comment as it was placed in the spam bin…I think you’ve missed the point here, I haven’t stopped my competitive gaming, I have just transferred it over onto the PS3.

I have heard that argument before about getting old & not being able to keep up in FPS games etc(eh Tobold!) & it just doesn’t wash with me…you aren’t in a wheelchair yet!?

I still play some games on the Mac but I definitely do a lot more board gaming these days. Rock Band still gets plenty of play on the PS2 because the neighbors can play as well.

Some games on the PC are great, some on consoles are great! I don’t think you can really lose right now.

  8. dmosbon Says:

Hey Robust’ board gaming is good if you have a supply of friends nearby that want to play…which I don’t have. I had been interested in Guitar Hero III but that has worn off a little for now.

Spore might be the only PC game I get now for the rest of this year, just too many good PS3 titles to come or already out there.
