Gamers early access to new titles seems to be making an unexpected turn. With recent announcements that Age of Conan’s open beta would be available only if you had a paid FilePlanet account, which doesn’t even guarantee a beta key which syncaine found out. Add to that that Spore will be allowing gamers to pay for a full demo of the creature editor, it does strike me that games companies are trying to offset certain risks in releasing a demo or a beta, by getting a small payment from the gamer in advance.
Age of Conan is being covered fairly heavily by Keen & Graev, while it looks as though Potshot has seen enough already. Mallika is approaching AoC carefully but hopes the experience will be as good for her as when she first played The Longest Journey, an earlier title from Funcom. I intend not to buy AoC but if the fates will have it, will review it given the opportunity.
As I write this, GTA IV has failed to materialise, even though I had it on pre-order. Frustration, as I had planned a first impressions of the game today. Safe to say, I wont be ordering a game from the online retailer in question, ever again. Instead, from all accounts, Gameseek looks an altogether better choice(yup, no waiting for a parcel from Jersey ever again!) & have heard pre-orders of GTA IV got to their customers yesterday, hmm.
Gaming Steve wonders if anyone at all is NOT buying GTA IV. Good question…are you buying it today?

Of course I am buying GTA IV. Well, I bought it last night already!
I do know maybe 5 people who didn’t buy it!

Umm… I haven’t bought a GTA game since GTA III. At the time it was widely hailed as the “greatest game ever” and yet it left me cold. I haven’t gone back to the series since.
The odd thing is I loved MAFIA and still consider it one of my greatest ever gaming experiences.

@ Cat How are you finding it? I did get my copy in the post yesterday & have played through the early missions. I’ll be making a early impressions post after all!
@ mbp give it a try, GTA IV has a very different feel than GTA III. Look for my post about it later today.
