Spore: The shape of demos to come?

June 17th 2008.
Mark it down now in your diary, as the Spore Creature Editor demo will be upon us in full force. But at what cost?
That’s right, if you want to be able to use the editor to its full potential, then a cost is involved:
“A complete retail version of the Spore Creature Creator will also be available in North America for $9.99 and most European territories for €9.99, which gives players access to all the creature-making parts in the game.”
But wait the free demo allows you 25 % of the overall mechanics of the Creature Editor:
“The free demo version of the Spore Creature Creator will be available worldwide via download from www.spore.com. The demo lets players mold, shape, paint and play with an unlimited number of creatures, using 25 percent of the creature-making parts from Spore. Gamers can then share these creations with their friends, including seamless uploads to YouTube. The demo will also be included in the The SimCity™ Box, which ships on June 23.”
Now I know gamers well enough to guess which version of the demo they will decide on & with this, could it be we are witnessing a new way to market a demo to the gaming public?
Demos of games are normally a free product that allow early access to a few levels of gameplay. Sure, Spore is ground breaking to a point but essentially by buying the Creature Editor demo you are paying for something, not once but twice, if you then buy the full game in September.
I’d be interested to know which readers are going to pay for the retail version of the demo?
Me? I’m undecided…

Hmm. I have to say that, anticipation for the game notwithstanding, I think I’ll be content with the free version. Playing around with it to see how it works is all I really care about, and I think even a stripped-down version will show me what I want to know.

Welcome Mallika
I am swinging towards the free demo also & agree with you that you’ll get to see how it works, if not with all the options. Clever marketing by Maxis/EA but I’m not sure if it will backfire on them or not?

I’ll be paying for the full version of the demo so fast it’d blow your minds.
