Embracing the Wii pt 2

This weekend allowed me to rub shoulders with the Wii once more as just before watching a largely forgettable movie, American Gangster I had the chance to play Wii Sports for the first time.

As I said recently I have tried out some Wii games but am still waiting for my own Wii system to turn up(15 days to go) but I got to try out Baseball, Bowling & Tennis on Wii Sports at a relations house. Each had a great feeling of fun with probably the Tennis being the better of the 3. The defending team in Baseball just seemed to be able to pluck any infield hits out of the air at ease which made for a frustrating experience since hitting the ball without fouling was hard enough.

I have had a few comments at work from people who don’t own a Wii dismissing it as a gaming machine because they feel if they wanted to play tennis they would do the real thing rather than be forced into swinging a controller around their living room. Which is a fair comment but the Wii is such a fun console to use in this active way it really is a break from the norm. of just hitting key combinations & I think that to dismiss it in such a way is very short sighted.

PES 2008 for the Wii – more control over movement

No boot controller just yet

To highlight this in maybe a more subtle way, the new PES 2008 has a great new way of controlling your players runs & movement on the Wii. I’d like to know how skill moves are performed with the Wii controller as I know the nunchuck gets plenty of use in the game.

i need better graphics and scenery. the sounds and the bobble-headed characters are annoying to me. i’d rather be doing something else entirely. just my opinion.

Chencenter I take it you are talking about Wii Sports here well it is the give away title with the console & it’s a nice introduction into Wii gaming.

Does this 1 title put you off playing the Wii?

  3. I sold my Wii over last Christmas. The games are clearly designed for a target audience that does not include me. I could see this system being great for parents who would like to game with their kids or for families, but for your lifelong gamer type these games are just not very compelling.

So far anyway. In the meantime I continue to get plenty of mileage on other platforms, and the Wii continues to release rehashes of old titles like Smash Bros.

I love that the Wii might bring gaming to a whole new audience, but after owning it for several months it became clear I was not a member of that audience.

so far, yes….it’s based on the one game. i kinda liked that one with the disco-dancing rabbit and you have to spray carrot juice at these creatures. wierd and very imaginative.

  5. I tried a whole slew of games on the Wii before just giving up. Even standard titles available on other gaming consoles (like EA Sports games, for example) just felt like a complete mess with the Wii controls, you could never quite get the character to do what you wanted. So much of the motion stuff seems tacked-on and not very well thought out.

@ chencenter – disco-dancing rabbit?! Come on your having me on here surely?

@ robustyoungsoul – I’ll have to hold back my opinion on just at the moment on the Wii. It does seem that you did a good test drive on the console & maybe it isn’t the one for you.

With regards to the motion control, PES 2008 seems to be a hit with reviewers on the Wii. I’d love to try it out, just so I could get the feel of the new control system.

  7. I think it is definitely a system that is worth trying and I hope it is a big success because bringing more people to console gaming is probably (not definitely) a good thing for the industry. But for me, the system did not come close to living up to the hype, and even some of the better reviewed games felt very clunky to me.

Hopefully with PES 2008 somebody has gotten motion control right!

  8. [...] A big reason for getting this console was to involve my wife into some active gaming that I could also take part in with her & this is looking healthy so far, as she gave the thumbs up on Wii Sports. It should also make a better social gaming activity when we have friends/family around, more so than the PS2 ever did. I also want to look at how single play is dealt with in Wii games releases, as well as the online options too as opinion on this not looking too grand just at the moment. [...]

  9. [...] positivity has come from the last couple of days, in that I have secured a review of Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 on the Wii console for the game site I freelance for, Ripten.com. I will be hoping to have a review up on the site by [...]
