Dead wood

Looking at my current batch of blogs that I have in Google Reader has thrown up some sad but curious truths. Only 2 blogs that I subscribe to are not related to MMORPGs…upon closer inspection a good number have ceased to post anything new since December & beyond.

AFK Gamer is a blog that in the past has been a consistent poster but Foton seems to have disappeared from view & nothing at AFK Gamer has been updated since 25th December. Where with at least 10 blogs that are in a similar state which I have decided to cull from my subscriptions, I will pause on doing the same to AFK Gamer.

I made a post last year where I hazard a guess that bloggers were burning out. The blog I used as an example then has gone on to survive & I expect AFK Gamer to return also, unless there are bad things behind the scenes that no one knows about.

This has got me thinking…sometimes you need to freshen things up & clear out any dead wood that is stopping you see the bigger picture. That’s not to say I’m making any wholesale changes to Sweet Flag but it could do with some airing.

Other than clearing out Google Reader, I have taken down the Gaming page from Sweet Flag. It needs rewriting & I had intended to add a Bio page but I have hesitated. I don’t really get anyone looking at the other pages so why would a Bio page be any different & then would my later plan of a Freelance Journalism page fail to attract as well?

What are you planning differently at your respective blogs or are you letting the dead wood pile up?

I have begun to switch over to talking about a mix of not only gaming – but also music/movies/RL as well. I just don’t have enough time to game much lately, so I don’t have much to talk about.

I’m sure I’ll lose lots of readers over it, but – what can ya do? =)

That’s the thing Cuppycake…I feel a fraud posting about games that I don’t play & OK I can comment on the news of a forthcoming game or maybe even a demo I may have played but if I’m not playing WoW, for example, what right do I have to make comment over it’s content or events in the game?

Sure gaming blogs can be good for acquiring a readership but the the readers that stick around even when topics change are really the only ones worth keeping anyway. We all know the majority of blog readers are looking at your blog because a search engine has directed them their for the information that they are hoping to find & then they move on.

Acquiring a readership that returns is not always that simple,,,there are just too many factors that can change from one post to the next.
