Freelance Journalism course final prep.

I begin my course tomorrow, Monday 15th January & so this will be my final preparation post. After contacting LSJ last week I received a email from Antionette with some further course details. One of the important aspects of the studying Freelance Journalism with LSJ, I have quoted here:

“In this course, there is also emphasis on the commercial realities of marketing your work, researching outlets, dealing with editors and preparing packages
for publication.”

Great to hear that you aren’t just studying & then left to fight your corner. With all the tutors being actively involved in freelance journalism, I really can’t see where you can mess up on this course & so the pressures on to keep to the work & see it through.

It certainly is going to be an interesting year!

1st two lessons

The course has 12 lessons with a combined total of 30 assignments. Once I pay the course fees, which I’m doing tomorrow, I can immediately download the first two lessons & begin the course.

Lesson 1 is titled Starting Out. It focuses on what makes a good journalist & the surrounding responsibilities & ethics of the profession.

Lesson 2 Readers and Markets teaches what readers & editors want. How to research potential markets & the overall presentation of manuscripts geared towards a professional looking piece of work. The differences between house style & newspaper English are also explored.

I will be making further posts this week to update my progress through lesson 1.

Good luck with the course and the new career. I’ve been doing bits and pieces of writing for money for the past few years. There is plenty of work out there for the right people. It can help to specialise. Many websites are desperate for content -especially stuff geared towards search engine optimisation.

    Once again, good luck!

    Thanks for the luck!

I have contacted Goal.com about freelance work but am still to hear back…who have you written for?

  3. online sports guy Says:

I wrote alot for Betfair in the past - they were quite good to work for - mainly about horseracing but not so much these days. Now I write for an independent content provider who then sells my work on.

  4. dmosbon Says:

Do you get a good kick back for your work to be sold on?

  5. online sports guy Says:

    Absolutely nothing!

  6. dmosbon Says:

You get no monies for your work?

  7. online sports guy Says:

Sorry, maybe I mislead you. I get money for a piece of work but if that is sold on again I don’t get anymore. Once I hand it over it is the content company’s property - so no repeat fee for me:(

  8. dmosbon Says:

Ah I think I put my question the wrong way & added to the confusion!

I suspect most freelance journalism is like this…once your work is sold to a outlet you lose the rights to it & further payment?
