Spore sides with the Wii?
Discussing Spore with Cat on a recent post, the topic of cross platform releases for the game cropped up & if Spore would appear on anything other than the PC.
It does seem like the PC will get the game first, in what we can only hope will be early next year but a recent article on Gamespot highlights Will Wrights appreciation of the Wii gaming system:
“We’re doing Spore on the Wii,” Wright stated seemingly off the cuff. Wright didn’t elaborate on further plans for the Wii version, nor whether it would accompany the PC version slated for Q2 2008. EA had not responded to requests for comment as of press time.
Wright’s preference for Nintendo’s platforms comes as no shock, considering how he sizes up the next-gen console race. Prompting the off-the-script comment, Wright said that Nintendo’s “new-gen” console is the only real next-gen console. “The only next gen system I’ve seen is the Wii–the PS3 and the Xbox 360 feel like better versions of the last, but pretty much the same game with incremental improvement,” the openly opinionated designer said.

I had missed this article when it originally came out & haven’t found anything else to back up the comments by Will Wright.
This stance could see both the XBOX 360 & PS3 luck out when it comes to getting Spore on their systems but it does through open how a game like Spore is going to translate onto the Wii system?
If you have heard more on this story I’d love to hear about it or of course your own thoughts!

i haven’t heard much more than that but i did hear it right from will wrights mouth on G4 TV during a presentation on Spore. Coming from a Wii owner I am excited to see a game exclusive to the Wii from an outside company.

I really, really doubt it that it will be on a console. Especially not the Wii that [no offence to the Wii] doesn’t have the power graphically for example. If Spore ever makes it to a console it will be so much dumbed down to the point where it’s not even the same game.
Like the Sims and the Sims on the consoles..

Although I am impressed by the imagination that is going into Spore I doubt if I will ever play it. I never could get into open ended God games. Black and White for example just didn’t do it for me. I need a few concrete objectives to direct my game play.

mbp - I think you may be surprised by the stage breakdown of the game & objectives should be of a higher profile than say in B&W…which I could never get into either…I’ll try my best to get more about Spore on the blog in the coming months so that we get a better overview of the game.

Actually Cat according to Will Wright himself on G4 the Wii would be the only console he released the game on.

Yeah Lance it’s looking likely that the Wii will get Spore but in what shape the game will be in on the console has not been commented on?
I had heard that a smaller game was to be released on the handheld market & I think that could be the case with the Wii.

Spore as a console exclusive for the Wii is big news, but I doubt it will be released alongside the PC version. The Wii version will probably come later, and many Wii owners will already own the game on PC by that time. Plus, Wii might get a lesser version. I seem to recall Wright saying just one or two levels of the game would be available on a handheld console. They might do the same with the Wii.
Anyway, the Wii needs it. I don’t own one, but it seems everyone’s always talking about Wii Sports (which comes with the console) and no other games. The Wii doesn’t seem to have many great titles yet. I wonder if that will hurt them down the road… like everyone buying used Wiis instead of new ones a year from now.

I don’t get G4 here, so I can’t comment.
Just to make it clear when I say the game won’t be on consoles I mean the proper version of the game, the one everyone is looking forward to, the one that’s coming out on the PC. If it does come out on consoles it’ll be a different game, shortened, many options removed, far simpler graphics, etc..
As you said Aaron, it’s a shame that there isn’t much on the Wii. I mean there’s Zelda and Mario Galaxy, but not much else..

I haven’t been tempted to buy a Wii & I think Spore on the console will have to offer something special to that title if it’s to sell well. It may not be able to offer the PC version but a Spore game that pushes the Wii’s boundaries could well give it an opening for other game developers to take the plunge with the console.

Sorry Cat G4 is a gaming channel here in the states. if Spore comes out on Wii you can gaurentee it will be a chopped down version of the PC release.

I am going to be mad if it doesn’t come out for the Wii at the same time as for the PC and if it gets parts cut out.

Superspore hello, there’s no official announcement on when Spore will be released on the Wii & it looks that the initial release will be the PC & MAC versions with others following.
Even a mobile device Spore is in the pipeline but I believe that will only be the CC part of the game.
Remember September is still a few months away & anything can happen in that time.
