Call of Duty 4 - soap in the eye?

The Christmas break is upon us all again & for one I am hoping for some gaming cheer over the next couple of weeks.

With the extra time I should be able to play both Call of Duty 4 & Tabula Rasa. There have been some changes recently in TR which I want to try out but for now CoD4 has me coiled into it’s web.

I will give my first impressions of CoD4 in the remainder of this post & it will have to be impressions as I am still working my way through Act I in single player & have yet to try out multiplayer to any degree.

Sergeant John “Soap” MacTavish

Although you assume a number of characters in CoD4, ‘Soap’ is introduced early on in the game & lasts the duration although you are switched between characters throughout the game. ‘Soap’ is part of an SAS regiment.

Sergeant Paul Jackson & Captain Price are the other two characters that the player assumes over the course of the 3 Acts.

The 3 Acts take place over & around the old ‘Soviet Union’ & the Middle East with some of the game played out in flashback time frame of 15 years past

The flashback part of the game is played out in an old Ukraine city of Prypiat. This section of the game is played out in Act II & is something I am really looking forward to as it recreates the area around Chernobyl with all it’s dereliction left from the Chernobyl disaster.

One other game that I know of has based itself in this area around Chernobyl & played on the nuclear fallout from the disaster, that game being S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Shadow of Chernobyl. I have never played this game.

The Good & the Bad…thus far

A quick overview of what I have like & dislike in CoD4:

Good

Missions are just long enough & contain just enough to do to keep you wanting to play that next mission in line.

Squad member support immerses you in the storyline & in the care for them & you as a unit. AI very well done. They look out for you with covering fire & audible commands as well as throwing enemy grenades back from whence they come.

Good array of modern weaponry. Look out for the Javelin!

Strong graphics & sound.

Bad

The grenade highlight that notifies you that one is in your close proximity is hard to notice when in the intensity of battle & can be missed. Kaboom!

Not much else…

In my next CoD4 post I will bring you my impressions on the mutiplayer side of the game as well as more on Acts I & II.

Oh WOW!!! I played COD4 at my mates house in Bristol over the weekend and, quite frankly, I was blown away. As a big fan of COD3 multiplayer, this just amazed me. I played it on an HD projector with 5.1 surround sound - I had the ultimate gamegasm!!!

Keep an eye out for the little comments that pop up when you die I believe they are quotes rather. But there is a quote from a USAF AMMO Troop that is my career field.

  3. Phil Says:

I love that game and the multiplayer progression system is a blast as well. Have you made it to the C-130 part? It almost looks and feels real.

@ Jonny Does that mean you are going to buy it so we can do a little head to head? Hehe…! Come on you know you want to!

@ Lance Yes I have seen those but haven’t taken them in just yet. Are you still active in the US Army?

@ Phil Just past the C-130 part…gunner ready!…the sound effects of the shells dropping after every shot is so well done & I love the pause before each target is hit on the ground…ka-boom!

  5. Lance Says:

Actually I am in the Air Force but yes still active just re-enlisted for another 6 years.

  6. dmosbon Says:

Lance are you being posted out in Korea? Have you ever thought about blogging your military experiences?

  7. Lance Says:

Yeah leave for Korea the beginning of February. I have actually not thought about it I may start though.

Lance think it would be a good thing to do…I would certainly find it an interesting read!

The story is intriguing. The car drive after the first level just had me sitting there thinking wtf that was all about!

I’d add AI to the bad points or rather failing a mission due to shooting your team mates even though they look like terrorists! Not that I’d want flashing lights for them, but it’s very frustrating.
